This is the first course in the general high school mathematics sequence for college preparation. Emphasis will be placed on investigative thinking and application. Students will study such areas as the field properties of the real numbers, linear and quadratic equations, factoring, inequalities, rational expressions, theory of exponents, radicals, statistics and other unified topics.

**Geometry**

This course is designed to help students understand deductive and inductive reasoning. Students will use investigative thinking and apply their discoveries to form theorems. Students are taught to relate the theoretical to the practical.

**Algebra 2**

This course is a college preparatory course and is required by the Oregon University system. Students who plan on going into fields where mathematics is involved – family and consumer studies, business, science, computer science and engineering should take this course as well. Course topics include functions, linear and quadratic relations, systems, radicals, trigonometry, polynomials, exponential, and logarithmic functions.

This course is designed to allow students to develop the conceptual understanding, fluency and skill proficiency in essential prerequisite math skills needed for Algebra 2. The student will create and solve equations and inequalities, solve systems of equations and inequalities (including literal equations), and study functions including function notation, families of functions, transformations, systems, domain and range, and key features of graphs.

This course is an investigation of topics that are used in the study of calculus. Precalculus consists of two separate courses, College Algebra and Trigonometry. In College Algebra, students study equations and graphs of linear, quadratic, polynomial, rational, exponential, and logarithmic functions. In Trigonometry, students study theoretical and real-world implications of the trigonometric functions. Solving problems analytically, numerically, and graphically will be emphasized.

**AP Fee:** Near the end of the course, there will be an exam that requires a fee (see page 4 for more details).

Your decision to take an AP course is also a commitment to complete the entire course – casually dropping the course is not an option and requires a meeting with administration. This course covers the topics specified in the College Board Course Description for AP Calculus AB. Topics covered include functions and their graphs, limits, derivatives, and integrals. Emphasis will be given to derivatives as rates of change, local linear approximation using tangent lines, and integrals as models of accumulation. Calculus is required by college programs involving advanced mathematics such as science, computer science, and engineering.

**Business Math with Algebra**

Business Math with Algebra courses teach and have students apply algebra concepts to a variety of business and financial situations. Applications usually include income, insurance, credit, banking, taxation, stocks and bonds, and finance.

**Math Studies**

Math Studies is designed for students who have completed Algebra 2, but do not plan to study Calculus. Math Studies consists of the same College Algebra topics as Precalculus A plus an introduction to Probability and Statistics. Students study equations and graphs of linear, quadratic, polynomial, rational, exponential, and logarithmic functions. In Probability, students study randomness and probability, counting outcomes, mutually exclusive events, expected value, permutations, combinations, and the Binomial Theorem. In Statistics, students study normal distributions, z-values, correlation, and least-squares lines. Solving problems analytically, numerically, and graphically will be emphasized.
