One erg is equal to the work done by a force of one dyne, when its point of application moves 1cm in the direction of action
Origin:
In 1873, a committee of the BAAS recommended the name erg or ergon for the C.G.S. unit of energy
Common references:
- One erg is approx. the amount of work done by one house fly performing one push up - ie bending its legs to move its mouth the surface on which it stands and then back up.
Usage context:
The Erg originated in the centimetre–gram–second (CGS) system of units and was widely used in chemistry
